Just Plain Folks Awards... 2009
So, not too long ago I learned that my song "(I Guess I'll Have to Spend) Christmas Here" was nominated for a Just Plain Folks Award in the Best Song - Cabaret - Category. They have lots of clever categories for the JPF Awards, but still, I like the recognition. I also noticed that Todd Snider, who is the mutha-effing bee's knees by-the-way, was also up for a JPF or two for a record he did with Will Kimbrough. So I figured, "I'm in good company. These JPF awards are okay in my book"
Well the results came in the mailbox today (not the one that has spiders living it, but the msn one with Beyonce and ads for Balloon Kyphoplasty living in it).
Alas, my song did not win it's cozy little category, but it was honorably mentioned as a "sixth place" winner. Really? I'm wondering, " Is sixth place really worth mentioning?" WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN (Bum, Bum, Bum) I noticed that Todd Snider also received an honorable "sixth place" in the Americana Song Category.
Well I really couldn't think of better company. thanks JPF.

May 2009 - EP
The May 2009 EP that I pressed in commemoration of May/June's cross-country tour/roadtrip/redbull-madness was limited to a pressing of 50 copies (signed and numbered). In response to the demands from friends, fans, and family who weren't able to pick one up in Denver, or Brooklyn... or the Inn at Morro Bay (c'mon folks), I've made a few of the tracks available for free download.
Click on the above widget and enjoy, or click here and be whisked away promptly.

Jody was raised in (and currently resides in) a tiny town about 100 miles up the California coast from Santa Barbara. After studying Vocal Jazz and Classical Voice and touring the U.S. and Europe with award-winning vocal ensembles, he formed old-time-americana outfit The Johnny Starlings with friend and collaborator Yohei Shikano.
The group released "Aiming Too High" (2006) and "Be My Baby Bright" (2007), and Jody has since heard his songs performed on "A Prairie Home Companion" (by the talented Miss Inga Swearingen) and enjoyed the warm reception of his music in music halls, on make-shift stages in sunny fields, and in dark, cozy rooms up and down the Coast of California.
Recently, Mulgrew made available a limited CD release of two collections, entitled May 2009 and June 2009. Each release was limited to 50 pressings, signed and numbered and featuring unreleased home, studio and live recordings. Though the initial CD pressings are out of print, some of the musical content from each is available at Bandcamp.com
